Skill Development Initiative – June 2022 Recap
June 2022 witnessed a remarkable surge in the number of non-shelter residents eager to acquire new skills that would benefit them in the long or short run. This influx reflected a growing enthusiasm for vocational training and self-sufficiency.
Tailoring Department
The tailoring department proved to be one of the most dynamic and engaging areas, with students making tremendous strides daily. A diverse mix of shelter and non-shelter residents participated, diligently honing their skills.
Within just a few weeks of training, new trainees showcased their progress by successfully sewing their first sets of garments. Their commitment and eagerness were evident during working hours as they collaborated with their tutor, refining techniques and improving their craftsmanship.
However, progress was somewhat hampered by the malfunction of one of the two sewing machines, which required urgent repairs. Despite this challenge, students remained resilient, adapting to the available resources while awaiting the intervention of a technician.
Marking and Beads Department
Madame Clarisse played a pivotal role in guiding students through the intricate process of beadwork and marking. By June, trainees had successfully initiated the startup process for producing bead-embellished footwear, with plans to attach them seamlessly to soles.
To optimize efficiency and mastery, a recommendation was made to separate trainees focusing on marking from those dedicated to beadwork. This approach was aimed at fostering deeper concentration on individual skills, ensuring precision and proficiency in each craft.
Knitting Department
While initially less active, the knitting department saw a gradual increase in participation under the instruction of Madame Bali Christa. By June, she had welcomed four dedicated students eager to learn the art of knitting.
One of the key challenges faced was the delayed procurement of knitting threads, though provisions had been made to address this issue. Looking ahead, expectations were high for a more bustling and productive period from July onwards, with anticipated growth in student engagement and overall output.
